Although I went into my first treatment with the full intention of the cold caps kicking chemo’s butt, I knew there could be a chance that it wouldn’t work for me.  With that in mind, I decided to be prepared and find myself a fabulous wig before starting my treatments.

First of all.. I had no idea where to start.  There are so shops and online stores to choose from — I knew I wanted a quality piece that I could wear for a while, something fun yet comfortable.  My hairstylist recommended a shop here in LA and after reading their reviews, I knew this would be my first stop.

Since this was something brand new for me, I was a little scared at the thought of going to a wig shop alone so I asked one of bestest girlfriends to go with me and she brought her two adorable girls with us (my dream team).  I would encourage anyone going through this to bring a friend with you — this is such a difficult step and having these girls with me, turned this into such a positive experience.

We went to Godiva’s Secret in Woodland Hills, California and they have the sweetest and helpful staff (they also have an online shop too).  They were very understanding of my situation and provided the best guidance while I was there. With the help of my dream team, I must have tried on a dozen wigs, all different lengths and colors.  I still had my full head of hair at the time, but I could still fit most of the wigs on my giant head without having to use a cap. The winner was suggested by one of our little helpers (so proud of our future stylist) and she insisted that I try that one on.  At first, I hesitated since it wasn’t a color I would normally flock to but I immediately fell in love with ‘her’ once on.

Because you’re getting a higher quality product, the wigs here are slightly higher in price as well.  I purchased two synthetic wigs and both were in the $300-$400 range. Both pieces are amazing; they are so comfortable to wear, light-weight and I love the cuts and colors.  

After my introduction at Godiva’s, I purchased a few more wigs online from Divatress and Uniwigs.  Both popular on social media — I watched reviews on YouTube and read through other social feeds about their products before deciding to take a chance.  

With Divatress, you really can’t beat their price point.  I purchased two pieces, one synthetic and one synthetic blend with human hair.  Both pieces were in the $25-$35 range and I think the overall quality is decent for that price.  They require a bit more styling and adjustments to not look so wiggy but I made them work for me.

I also purchased one piece from Uniwigs and I have so much fun with it!  Somedays you just need unicorn hair. This piece was around $140 but with a coupon code, I got the price down to $112.  I love the length of this one.. I have the versatility to braid it or leave it down and it’s so soft. The quality is great for the price too.  Because this is a lace front wig, I’m able to blend this into my natural hairline with some dark brown eyeshadow. Unlike the other wigs, I do have to use tape to secure this one to my head.  Since I don’t have much hair, I use fashion tape which works surprisingly well.

When reading through websites about hair loss and chemo, they recommend purchasing one great wig — oh honey, I now have 5!  It’s an obsession. I know my hair will begin to grow back once I complete my treatments but I love having so many options. And for the cost, I can’t believe I didn’t think about wigs before, it’s an amazing way to change up your look without the commitment.  Yes, it does get a little awkward at work when I have silver hair one day and purple unicorn hair the next, but I just roll with it. LatelyI’ve been feeling a lot more comfortable with myself that I am happy to tell people that I’m wearing a wig, especially when they insist on asking how I got that hair color — most times they don’t believe me (which says a lot about the wig!).

At the end of the day, you sometimes have to make the best of your situation and have fun with it.  This process alone has made my journey through chemotherapy more manageable and helped ease my hair loss anxiety.
