headscarf diaries
I used to feel apprehensive to wear a headscarf or beanie out in public. I think perception and how we believe people see us is something that can bring out a lot of anxiety. I’ve taken my hairloss and hair growth, like with many other things I’ve experienced, one step at a time. This has been one of those steps.. I’m learning to feel more confident in my own skin and lack of hair. I’m learning to embrace the notion that this is who I am now and finding ways to enhance that beauty and not hide it away as a flaw.
My new love affair with headscarves began when I discovered a vlogger and all-around cancer-fighting thriving badass, Nalie Agustin. Before reading through her blog and watching her videos, I felt I was in another lull, stuck in the flow of things. Hearing her familiar story and seeing her vibrant personality, urged me to keep moving forward. I love that she’s not afraid to be herself — not to mention, her amazing head scarf style is on point!
I personally love fun, bright, playful, colorful patterned scarves (they help me shine!) I use your normal everyday scarf and will just fold it in half, length-way (aka hotdog style – does anyone else use this term or is it just me?)
How to find a scarf that’s right for you? The thicker the scarf, the larger the ‘bun’; the longer scarves are easier to tie; silk scarves can get a bit slidey; embellishments (like tassels) on the ends may hang and be difficult to tuck; favorite place to shop for scarves: Target!
But, my best advice is to have fun with it — they don’t need to match your outfit.. Headscarves are a fashion piece that can stand on their own.
These photos were taken from March 2018-present. (note: the last photo in this collage was taken by my hubby.. can’t you tell?!? LOL! he loves to zoom in on my crazy-eyes and mannequin-like face. SMH)
I learned how to tie a headscarf from watching Nalie’s videos and others on YouTube… sometimes social media can be helpful. Here’s my take (and visual guide) on tying a headscarf, which I’ve dubbed “the power bun”:
Wearing a headscarf has turned into a nice change for me. I usually alternate it with my wiggy days at work. Most people I encounter want to know how I tie them and I actually get a ton of compliments, which is such a positive response given how I used to think and feel when I first started wearing these. I truly believe headscarves are not only practical and fashionable, but also a great way to show the world who you are. I hope this post helps to inspire your shine..
